“He knows what crunch time is all about because he’s been there,” said Yeng Guaio on Rain Or Shine’s new import Wayne Chsim

Coach Yeng Guaio may have been contented with import Alex McLean’s performance before, but now he wants to have an import who can change their fate in the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup.

And Guiao is convinced new import Wayne Chism has what it takes to bring the added inside presence that Rain or Shine is badly lacking in the ongoing tournament.

The fiery coach made the assessment on Friday shortly after Chism’s first practice with the Elasto Painters at the Nega Sports Center in Greenhills, San Juan.

Chism is coming over to replace Alex McLean, who, despite averaging modest numbers of 22.8 points and 15.4 rebounds in five games with the team, didn’t look like the import capable of leading Rain or Shine deep into the playoffs.

“According to Gabe (Norwood), nakita niya naglaro iyan (Chism) sa (University of) Tennessee. He was the primary option of that Tennessee team so he knows what taking over is all about,” Guiao told Spin.ph after the team’s practice.

“He knows what crunch time is all about because he’s been there.”

Under McLean, the Elasto Painters could only post a 2-3 (win-loss) record for a tie with defending champion Alaska for sixth to seventh spots.

But Guiao is positive enough that with Chism’s arrival, the team is capable of winning three of its last four games in the short elimination round, enough to give the Elasto Painters a slot in one of the two best-of-three quarterfinal pairings.

The Rain or Shine coach mentor, though, had to manage the team’s first practice with its new import, owing to the humidity inside the Nega gymansium.

“Hindi namin masyadong sinagad ang practice, kasi galing siya (Chism) sa Tennessee. Spring na dun so medyo malamig lamig pa rin. Nag-a-adjust pa siya though galing na rin siya dito several weeks ago,” said Guiao.

The coach said the team is not skipping practice this weekend as it prepares for the critical game on Monday against winless GlobalPort.

Original Import of Barako

Chism, who easily blended with his new teammates, was supposed to be Barako Bull’s original import choice for the conference.

But a contract problem with his former team in the Hungarian basketball league forced the Energy to drop him.

He played in one preseason match with Barako Bull, helping the Energy score a 96-89 win over the Aces.

Guiao can only hope that Chism will be the answer to Rain Or Shine’s woes in this short tournament.
