Sec. Judy Taguiwalo of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) won’t resign from the Duterte Cabinet due to more important issues needs to be addressed by DSWD and President Rody Duterte.

The DSWD Secretary responded to media reports answering calls for her resignation from the Duterte administration “either for her supposed “silence” on the Marcos burial issue, or to register her strong protest to the President.

According to Secretary Taguiwalo she has to stay in the Cabinet to support Pres. Rody Duterte’s “positive” action on concerns that the Left – of which she is part – shared with the leader. As a Cabinet member she wants a just and lasting peace, an independent foreign policy, prioritizing social services and the needs of the poor, including ending labor contractualization, spearheaded by Pres. Duterte.

Sec. Taguiwalo released the following statements: “I have not been silent on the issue of the Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. In fact, I spoke at a presscon here in Baguio last Friday and expressed my dismay over it.”

“In the evening I joined other survivors of martial law and students of the University of the Philippines as they also denounced the development.”

The DSWD Secretary added further that “I am one with the Filipino people protesting the sudden and sneaky Marcos burial at LNMB. I have said it before and I will say it again, Marcos is not and can never be a hero.”

“Before I was sworn in as a member of his cabinet, President Duterte; was aware of our differences in some issues, including the Marcos burial. Still she appointed me to be part of his official family.”

Sec. Taguiwalo also pledged “to continue the principal thrusts of the DSWD as a department intent on providing prompt and compassionate services to the poor and marginalized, to treat communities fairly and to combat all forms of corruption.”
