The former war-torn country of Vietnam, the major source of rice imports by the Philippines, has pledged to support the rehabilitation of war-raved Marawi City after a bilateral meeting between Pres. Duterte and Vietnam Pres. Tran Dai Quang.

According to a report posted by Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, the Vietnamese government initially donated 4,000 bags of rice to the Philippines. The pledged of support was made by the Vietnamese government to Pres. Duterte during the APEC 2017 Bilateral Talks between the Philippines and Vietnam.

President Rody Duterte thanked the Vietnamese President and pledged to work on the rescue of Vietnamese sailors abducted by the Abu Sayyaf in the Southern Philippines. The Philippine troops already succeeded in rescuing the abducted Vietnamese nationals a day after the bilateral talks.

The 72-year-old Philippine President also promised to release Vietnamese fishermen who were caught by the Philippine Navy poaching in the country’s fishing grounds.

Vietnamese President Quang also assured Pres. Duterte of his country’s support in its agricultural development initiatives. The Vietnamese leader also said that Vietnam remains committed to supply the Philippines rice requirements.

The Philippines imports at least 5% of its rice needs from Vietnam and Thailand.
