The Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported that the New Bohol (Panglao) Airport Project started by the Aquino administration is now 90.14% complete as of June 30, 2018. The airport which is designed to the country’s “First Eco-Airport” was supposed to be completed by year 2021 but due to the efforts of the Duterte administration, the airport could be inaugurated this coming October 2018.

According to DOTr the Panglao Airport is also dubbed as the “Green Gateway to the World,” that aims to be an environment-friendly and sustainable structures which will be used in the construction. The Panglao Airport will be installed with solar panels to be installed on the Passener Terminal Building’s roof to cover around 1/3 of the airport’s energy requirement.

The DOTr noted that the New Bohol (Panglao) Airport is expected to accommodate two (2) million passengers in its opening year, alone from 800,00 passengers currently being accommodated by the Tagbilaran Airport.

The Transportation agency headed by Secretary Arthur Tugade also explained to those who doubted the DOTr and questioned the agency’s alleged credit-grabbing of the Aquino project as they noted that the Panglao Airport was really started by the Aquino administration and continued by the Duterte administration.

During the time when the Duterte administration took over, the construction was not even started yet. The Duterte admin started at almost ground zero and as of July 2016, the supposed target completion date of the PNoy project will be in 2021, which means that once Panglao Airport will be inaugurated in October 2018, the DOTr’s constrution of the said project is three years ahead of the scheduled target completion.

The construction of the P7-Billion Eco-Friendly Airport in Bohol was expected to start in June 2015, according to former DOTC Secretary Jun Abaya. When Pres. Duterte took over last June 2016, they started at ground zero which is contrary to various reports from the media during the PNoy admin that they already making efforts to fast-tracked the airport project.
