The Strategic Communication and Initiatives Sevice of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) produced a video showing the results of the 6-month closure of the world-renowned Boracay Island.

The DENR made the video presentation of the updates and results of the Boracay Clean-up and presented it to the top officials of the Palace. Malacañang said it was vindicated after the result of a recent survey showing that the majority of Filipinos supported the closure of Boracay for six months.

Based upon the latest Social Weather Station (SWS) survey released on Monday, it showed positive results with 64 percent of Filipinos support the closure of Boracay to allow its rehabilitation after Pres. Duterte likened the resort island as a “cesspool.”

According to the presentation video by DENR, the island of Boracay is Located 315 kilometers from Manila, it is dubbed as the country and one of the world’s no.1 tourist destinations.

Based upon the records of the local tourism office, from 160,000 tourists in 1996, Boracay Island received a record breaking 1.5 million tourists per year with a revenue collection of P58 Billion in 2015 only.

The 6-month closure of Boracay was due to some issues such as the Improper Disposal of Solid and Liquid Waste; Water Pollution; Overpopulation; and Road Congestion.

Through President Duterte’s directives an inter-agency task force, composed of the DENR, DOT, and DILG was created to spearhead the Boracay Clean-up and Rehabilitation with a goal to make it a safe, healthy and environment-friendly place for tourist.
