Brief History of TikTok:

TikTok is a Chinese-based social media app dedicated to short-form videos submitted by users and consumed by user-consumers. The videos submitted and posted on Tiktok are 15 to 60 seconds long.

The story of this social media app that dominated worldwide began in 2016, when Chinese company ByteDance launched an app called A.me, allowing users to create and share short videos.

It was renamed Douyin three months later, and in 2017, ByteDance began the expansion of the short-form video platform outside of China under the name Tiktok. ByteDance then acquired a similar short-form video app Musical.ly, and from that, they expanded to a billion users worldwide, a milestone that was reported on The Verge.

TikTok crossed 2 billion downloads according to the data provided by Sensor Tower in April 2020, while in 2021, Cloudflare reported that Tiktok surpassed Google as the world’s most popular domain.

What is Bitskwela?

Bitskwela is a portmanteau of “bitcoin” and “eskewla,” the educational technology platform provides free cryptocurrency lessons in different Filipino languages and dialects such as Filipino (Tagalog), Cebuano, and Ilocano aside from the English language and will explore later into Ilonggo, Bicolano, Waray, Kapampangan, and Pangasinense to name a few.

The company was launched in 2022 with Jiro Reyes as Chief Executive Officer, alongside their Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), JC Macalintal.

In an interview with Spot.Ph Jiro Reyes revealed that while watching YouTube videos about cryptocurrency, he noticed that nearly all available information about digital tokens is written in English and often presented in a technical manner that could be quite difficult to understand for typical Filipinos.

The 23-year-old Jiro Reyes then realized that the language barrier is one of the major reasons why cryptocurrency adoption among Filipinos is low despite rising interest and why some people fall prey to scams. This is one of the reasons why Bitskwela was founded, to solve the problems of the growing Web3 industry in the Philippines.

One of Bitskwela’s flagship projects, the Bull or Bear Debate, will be coming to Cebu on July 15, 2023, at the Ayala Center Central Block located at the Central Business District of Cebu, the Cebu IT Park in Barangay Lahug Cebu City.

Bull or Bear will present some of the most prominent names in the Philippines’ Telecom, Finance, and Web3 industries to discuss the adoption of Web3 in the country.
