Gilas Pilipinas is still in contention for the much-coveted lone Olympic slot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and the Philippines’ chances will depend on the outcome of Japan vs. Cape Verde game.
All the Asian Teams are still in contention for the lone Olympic berth as China, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Philippines will have their chances if Japan loses to Ivory Coast in the Classification Round of the FIBA World Cup 2023.
Out of the 32 participating teams in the FIBA World Cup, 16 are now in contention for the title in the Second Round, while the other 16 teams are still fighting for an Olympic qualification through the Classification 17-32 Round.
The Olympic Games Qualification is scheduled today, September 2, 2023. All the Asian teams are still in contention as the best-ranked team from Asia in the World Cup. The results of the Gilas vs. China match will determine the chances of the Philippines if Japan loses.
Although Japan is the only team with their destiny in their hands, they will play a “Final for the qualification to the Olympics at home,” but they are up against a strong opponent.
If Japan wins against Cape Verde, they will qualify, but if they lose, all Asian Teams are still in contention.

A victory for the Filipinos will be their first win in the World Cup since the 2014 edition, where the Philippines beat Senegal. The Gilas squad has not won in the World Cup since losing all of its five games four years ago in China and dropping the last four matches here in the Philippines.
According to FIBA Rules, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will directly qualify seven national teams for the Olympic Games, with hosts France already securing their automatic spot as the host of the Olympics.
The seven spots will include two teams from the Americas, two from Europe, one from Africa, one from Asia, and one from Oceania.
So far, only two teams have already secured their spot in the Paris Olympic Games, Australia and France.
The four remaining places for the Basketball game in the Olympics for the 12-team tournament are reserved for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024. FIBA also announced earlier that the national teams from Bahamas, Bahrain, Cameroon, Croatia, and Poland already secured their tickets for the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments in 2023.
