Pinoy-Led Web3 Startup DAOCre-8 Winner at Solana Hackathon

Philippine-based and Pinoy-led Web3 startup DAOCre-8 won fourth place at the Solana Hyperdrive Hackathon, a massive win for the Philippines out of the 900 projects globally.

A win for the Philippines indeed, according to DAOCre-8 co-founder Theo Roque in his announcement through his official Facebook account. According to the Web3 builder, the Philippines is ready to pioneer a DAO-powered renaissance.

DAOCre-8’s notable achievement put the Philippines on the world map of the Solana ecosystem as they secured the fourth position at the recently concluded Solana Hyperdrive Hackathon, bagging $10,000 USDC in prizes.

The victory for the Philippines under the DAO & Network States category proved that the country is now ready to compete against the big names in the industry. DAOCre-8 co-founder Theo Roque stated that the victory at the Solana Hackathon had yet to end, and it actually didn’t stop even after the submissions.

In a Facebook post, Roque stated that his team is continuously learning more about the Solana blockchain, the Rust programming language, Arweave through Irys as decentralized storage, and much more on the developer’s side.

Theo Roque also noted that his co-founders Emmanuel (EL) Bonuan and Jaime Zulueta are working hard on the business side, as he stressed that the DAOCre-8 is a pretty solid team.

The veteran full stack developer and CEO of Howdy Studios Theo Roque also recognized and was so grateful to The BLOKC for the gift of community and mentors who helped them end-to-end – from getting certified as a Solana Developer, to hackathon ideation, to Batangas, to presentation building and until the last minute of the submissions. The community at the BLOKC has been very supportive and helpful, according to Roque.

Meanwhile, The BLOKC said in a statement to BitPinas that the prize money awarded is in the form of $10,000 USDC, not credits or grants. The BLOKC is one of the supporters of DAOCre-8, a Philippine blockchain education provider co-founded by Eli Becislao.

According to The BLOKC, the Solana Hackathon significantly elevated DAOCre-8’s visibility, potentially opening doors for future grants and investment opportunities stemming from this exposure and victory at such a huge Solana event.

In a Facebook post, EL Bonuan said, “I thought up DAOCre-8 back in 2021 when the market started to decline; I put it in my idea bank and pursued other things. Come 2022, I revisited the idea of DAOs and tried to launch some things, but failed.”

The co-founder of The BLOKC, Eli Becislao, invited EL Bonuan to a group chat of Filipino builders discussing the Solana Hyperdrive hackathon; this is where Bonuan got connected with his co-founders Roque and Zulueta, both of whom Bonuan only met in passing in previous Web3 events.

When Eli Becislao was asked about why DAOCre-8 made it to the finals and eventually won, he noted that the team has been very consistent throughout the learning sessions provided by education and ecosystem builder The BLOKC.

Eli Becislao was quoted as saying, “DAOCre-8 is consistent. They really attended all the learning sessions and didn’t let anything pass. They accepted all criticisms and used that feedback to better and improve their project, narratives, and pitch since we had several mockup pitching sessions.” Becislao said.

What is DAOCre-8

EL Bonuan, Jaime Zulueta, and Theo Roque co-found DAOCre-8. They envisioned a platform that melds traditional crowdfunding with decentralized governance.

By doing so, it aims to foster a space where creators and backers can significantly impact project decisions via DAOs, Milestone-base funding, and AI-powered analytics.

What is the Hyperdrive Hackathon by the Solana Foundation

According to the Solana Foundation, the Hyperdrive Hackathon is an avenue for gathering global founders and developers to propel high-impact projects into the Solana ecosystem.

The 2023 edition of the Hyperdrive Hackathon saw over 7,000 participants, with 907 final projects submitted. One hundred twenty countries participated in the hackathon organized by the Solana Foundation. For the record, the 2023 hackathon is the 8th Solana Hackathon since its inception.

The Grand Champion title went to Fluxbot, an AI-powered chatbot facilitating seamless interactions with the Solana blockchain, winning $50,000 USDC and passes to the BreakPoint event in Singapore next year. BreakPoitnt is Solana’s flagship developer and ecosystem conference.

The Philippine team made a strong statement in the Solana Hyperdrive with ten qualified project submissions out of the 907 entries.

Aside from DAOCre-8, the Philippine delegations also submitted other projects such as ButterSol, TIQET, and Sayver; these projects made it to the finals, propelling the Philippines to the #6 spot globally regarding project quality.

These achievements from the Philippines for the Solana Foundation surpassed notable contenders such as India (rank #11) and Vietnam (#21).

Eli Becislao noted that the program of The BLOKC is more of incubation, and they helped the participants to come up with their Solana Hyperdrive project ideation stage, from prototyping to crafting their pitch and narratives. The group conducted several learning sessions over 45 days, both in-person and virtual.
