Former President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that he may run for either vice president or senator if his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, faces impeachment.

The older Duterte’s statement comes in response to alleged impeachment discussions among members of the House of Representatives regarding the Vice President.

He emphasized that he would re-enter politics if such a scenario unfolded, even though he had already retired from politics after serving as the country’s most popular president for the last six years.

Duterte expressed his willingness to run for office, stating, “I will be forced to either run for senator or vice president even though I’m old.” The statement went viral on social media after an interview on SMNI aired on Monday night was shared by some of his supporters online.

In the popular SMNI Show “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” former Pres. Duterte said “Alam ninyo ba kapag ginawa ninyo ‘yan, babalik ako sa pulitika… Mapilitan ako—it’s either I run for senator or I will run for vice president maski matanda na ‘ko,” (….) Mapipilitan akong lumabas sa retirement eh. When I begin to talk…election is just around the corner, talagang magka-babuyan tayo. I do not lose anything, I’m retired. Pero pagdating niyan na buhay pa ‘ko, ‘pag wala pa akong dementia, tatakbo akong…vice president… Kung si Inday ang presidente, okay lang,” Duterte said.

The 78-year-old veteran politician from Davao City also explained that when the election season approaches and political discussions begin, he would feel compelled to return to politics. Rody Duterte’s plans to run for VP is one of the worst nightmares among critics of the Duterte family according to some political analysts.

Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte, in response, expressed her full support for her father’s decision, emphasizing that the family stands behind him.

In an interview VP Sara Duterte said “Kung anuman ang desisyon ni Pangulong Duterte ay buo ang suporta ng pamilya sa kanya. Just like kung anuman ‘yung mga desisyon namin na mga anak regarding sa pulitika, buo din ang suporta ng pamilya sa amin, ganon din ang suporta namin sa desisyon ni Pangulong Duterte,” she said in an ambush interview on Tuesday.

VP Sara Duterte has been on the hot seat over issues on the widely-publicized confidential and intelligence funds, and due to some circumstances, the Vice President decided to give up and withdraw her proposed confidential funds for the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education where she heads.

Discussions on Impeachment

Regarding the discussions of possible impeachment, House Majority Leader Manuel Dalipe said earlier that there were no discussions in the Lower Chamber to impeach the Vice President. The lawmaker even clarified that it was only intended to cause a rift between VP Sara and House Speaker Romualdez.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez also said there’s nothing in the offing regarding the supposed impeachment talks against the Vice President.

The impeachment issue came out after ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro brought it about, but in a later news report from the Daily Tribune, she denied her earlier statement.

VP Sara Duterte and her camp said earlier that they are doing their due diligence about the impeachment claim and will release a comment “in appropriate time.”

Pres. Bongbong Marcos Weighs on Issues Involving VP Sara

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. also weighed in on the matter, stating that VP Sara Duterte does not deserve impeachment and that they will closely monitor the situation.

Vice President Sara Duterte continues to enjoy the full support of Pres. Bongbong Marcos, amid impeachment calls against her as the latter, emphasized that she does not deserve to be ousted from office.

“Binabantayan namin nang mabuti because we don’t want her to be impeached. We don’t want her to—she does not deserve to be impeached. So, we will make sure that this is something that we will pay very close attention to,” President Marcos said.
