Bar Exam 2023 Topnotchers

As promised earlier, the Supreme Court of the Philippines released the Bar Exam results on December 5, 2023. Along with the list of passers, the SC also released the Topnotchers and the Top Performing Law Schools.

According to the Supreme Court, a total of 10,387 examinees took the 2023 Bar examinations out of the 10,791 applicants.

The Supreme Court said 2023 will go down in history as the year when the results of two bar examinations — the 2022 Bar and the 2023 Bar — were released, followed by oath-taking ceremonies and signing of the Roll of Attorneys ceremonies for the passers.

The Philippines’ Supreme Court announced that 3,812 out of 10,387 (36.77%) successfully passed the bar exams.

Topping the 2023 Bar Examination is a University of Santo Tomas, Atty graduate. Ephraim Porciuncula Bie with an average rating of 89.2625%.

A graduate from the Ateneo de Manila University ranked second, Atty. Mark Josel Padua Vivit followed by the third-ranked Atty. Frances Camille Altonaga Francisco from San Beda University.

The Supreme Court of the Philippines noted earlier that the 2023 Bar Exam had an impressive 96.26% turnout. It was conducted last September 17, 20, and 24, 2023, in 14 local testing centers nationwide.

The 2023 Bar Exam testing centers were conducted in the National Capital Region (San Beda University – Manila, University of Santo Tomas, San Beda College Alabang, University of the Philippines – Diliman, Manila Adventist College, and University of the Philippines – Bonifacio Global City).

Testing centers were also in Luzon (Saint Louis University, Cagayan State University, and University of Nueva Caceres).

Meanwhile, the Visayas testing centers include (the University of San Jose – Recoletos, University of San Carlos, and Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation) and Mindanao (Ateneo de Davao University and Xavier University).

After successfully conducting the 2020-2021 and 2022 Bar Exams, the Supreme Court decided to use Examplify again, a computer-based examination program allowing examinees to take a test securely using their own devices.

Filipino aspiring lawyers took the 2023 Bar exam in person in their venue of choice, supervised by proctors, and monitored through closed-circuit television cameras.

According to Supreme Court Associate Justice Ramon Paul L. Hernando, 2023 Bar Examinations Chairperson, to raise the Bar for this year’s Bar Exam, they made sure that the regionalized and digitalized Bar was accessible and inclusive to all examinees, including those with special needs, to take the Exams under exceptional accommodations.

Updates on the Release of the 2023 Bar Exam Results

The Supreme Court of the Philippines assured the examinees that the results of the Bar Exam would be released before Christmas Day.

Last November 16, the Office of the Bar Chair (OBC) officially announced that the September 2023 Bar Exam Results will be out on the afternoon of December 5, 2023, or tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Supreme Court also added that the traditional release of the List of Passers will still be held at the Supreme Courtyard in Padre Faura Street, Manila.

The Philippine Supreme Court shall display the List of Successful Examinees on LED walls until 6:00 PM.

Aside from the Padre Faura display, the SC will announce the results through its official website and other social media platforms such as Twitter, Threads, Facebook, and Instagram.

Oath-Taking and Roll-Signing Ceremony

The Supreme Court earlier announced that the oath-taking and roll-signing ceremony for those who will pass the September 2023 Bar Exams is on December 22, 2023, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila.

Topnotchers and Top Performing Law Schools

The list of topnotchers for the September 2023 Bar Examinations will also be added here. The Supreme Court will also release the list of top-performing law schools.

During the previous Bar Exam conducted in 2020 and 2021, the Supreme Court did not release the list of topnotchers. Still, instead, they just recognized examinees who recorded “exemplary performance” in the Bar Exam.

During the previous Bar Exam, the Supreme Court also released the ranking of the law schools according to the percentage of passers or passing rate.

September 2023 Bar Exam Coverage

This year’s Bar Examinations tackled six core subjects:

  1. Political and Public International Law (15%)
  2. Commercial and Taxation Laws (20%)
  3. Civil Law (20%)
  4. Labor Law and Social Legislation (10%)
  5. Criminal Law (10%)
  6. Remedial Law, Legal and Judicial Ethics with Practical Exercises (25%)

According to SC, these core subjects were determined and approved by the Court En Banc upon thoughtful review of previous syllabi and due consideration of the latest developments in legal practice.

The Philippine Bar Examination is considered the most prestigious and most challenging professional licensure examination in the country for aspiring lawyers. It is the only Professional examination not handled by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). The Supreme Court of the Philippines exclusively conducts the Bar exam.
