Boracay Tourist Arrivals increased since 2022

The local government unit of Malay, Aklan, reported that Boracay tourist arrivals in 2023 reached more than 2 million, which is higher than its 1.8 million tourist-target.

After achieving the significant increase in Boracay tourist arrivals, the LGU also aims for a bigger goal for 2024: to reach 2.3 million.

Malay Mayor Optimistic on Reaching the 2024 Target

According to Malay Mayor Floribar Bautista’s interview with Rappler on Tuesday, December 26, they aim for 2.3 million Boracay tourists next year, slightly higher than the 2 million tourists who arrive in 2023.

As of December 2023, the LGU confirmed that they had already achieved their target for the year. Mayor Bautista’s optimism isn’t unfounded, as he noted that for 2023, at least 11 resorts have applied for permits to conduct fireworks displays to greet the New Year.

During the past few years, fireworks displays in Boracay have become a major tourist attraction during the New Year revelry, increasing the number of visitors to reach their target in 2024.

Mayor Bautista even received reports that some hotels are fully booked this year to celebrate New Year. Compared to the New Year celebration 2023, only eight hotels applied for a fireworks display permit.

Based on the LGU’s records, each hotel reportedly spends more than P1 million to celebrate New Year in Boracay Island, and the fireworks display lasts at least 20 minutes.

LGU Assured Security for Boracay Tourists

The LGU of Malay, Aklan, where Boracay Island belongs, assured that they have sufficient security officials to safeguard tourists expected for their Holiday and New Year celebrations.

Malay Mayor Bautista stated that at least 292 security forces were available any time of the day, and they came from different branches of government: the Navy, Coast Guard, Maritime Police, Mobile Force, SWAT Team, and the Philippine Army.

Aside from the official security forces from the national government, his local security, beach guards, and LGU personnel were also ready to support augmentation and as force multipliers.

The LGU also noted that despite the expected increase in tourists during the Holiday season, they will continue strictly enforcing and controlling the number of tourists flocking to Boracay based on the island’s carrying capacity of 6,405 individuals at a given time.

Achieving the 2 Million Boracay Tourist Arrivals in 2023

Based on the official records of the Malay LGU, as of December 15, 2023, Boracay has recorded a total of 2 million tourists, higher than its 1.8 million tourist-target. The island is also one of the most visited islands in the Philippines for the past few years.

Boracay Island is considered one of the most Instagrammable places in the world in 2023, according to a travel website, Big7 Enjoy Travel.

The travel website released the Top 50 list based on the number of hashtags on Instagram and TikTok.

Boracay is best known for its powdery white sand and crystal clear waters, ranked 39th in the list of “Most Instagrammable Places in the World.” The website revealed that Boracay has 804,525,339 hashtags on Instagram and TikTok.
