Disney+ Boycott After Elon Musk Statement

Social media saw a significant rise in calls to boycott Disney’s streaming services following Elon Musk’s accusation that Disney+ CEO Bob Iger allegedly played a leading role in the advertising boycott against Musk’s platform X.

Prominent right-wing accounts like End Wokeness, Libs of TikTok, Zero Hedge, and Elon Musk (Parody) encouraged their followers to cancel their subscriptions to Disney+ and Disney-owned Hulu in protest of the advertising withdrawal by the Walt Disney Company and other major corporations.

This advertising pullout reportedly involved companies such as Apple, IBM, Paramount, NBC Universal, Comcast, and Warner Bros. Discovery, as reported by various media outlets.

Aside from the X users mentioned above, there are other reports on Twitter that there were mass cancellations of Disney+ subscriptions after the controversial Elon Musk interview.

How Did It All Start?

Twitter owner Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, made a controversial proclamation during an interview as he made it clear at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit that he had no intention of begging advertisers to return to his platform.

The billionaire founder of tech companies even singled out Mr. Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney+, in his statement.

“If somebody’s going to try to blackmail me, blackmail me with money, go f* yourself. Go f* yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is,” Mr. Musk said onstage to a visibly surprised audience. “Hey, Bob [Iger], here in the audience. That’s how I feel. Don’t advertise.” Musk said.

The Twitter CEO also implied that his fans would boycott those advertisers as he would let the world know that those killed the company, and he would document it in great deals.

Elon Musk stated when he bought Twitter last year that he wanted the platform to return to a free-speech platform following years of complaints about shadow-banning and suppression of conservative views.

The advertising boycott against Twitter was triggered by two events, a Nov. 16 report by left-wing Media Matters for America accusing X of placing ads next to neo-Nazi content and Mr. Musk’s Nov. 15 comment agreeing with a post accusing Jewish communities of pushing “hatred against whites.”

Elon Musk already apologized for the two incidents, calling it “foolish” and saying, “It might be literally the worst and dumbest post I’ve done.”

The billionaire founder then visited Israel and met with top leaders. After the visit, Mr. Bob Iger decided they would pull out their advertising from Twitter.
