Mark Magsayo Prays for Isaac Avelar

Mark Magsayo sent a clear message to the 130-pound division with a one-punch knockout victory over Isaac Avelar in front of a passionate crowd at Infinite (also known as Thunder) Studios. Right after the win, Mark Magsayo took to Twitter and said that he was praying for the safety of his opponent, Isaac Avelar.

According to Mark Magsayo, in the end, they are all boxers, and outside the ring, they are brothers. He also noted that they are fighting for their families and respective countries, hoping that Isaac Avelar would be okay after the fight that sent him to the hospital.

Mark Magsayo originally hails from Tagbilaran City, Bohol, and resides in Valencia, Los Angeles, California, USA. The 28-year-old professional boxer improved his record to 25 wins and two losses, with 17 of those victories coming by knockout.

Right from the start of the fight, Magsayo took on the role of the aggressor, keeping Avelar on the defensive. While the pace of the bout slowed, Magsayo consistently landed the more effective punches.

Magsayo’s opponent, Isaac Avelar, did manage some moments, landing occasional counterhooks and sweeping right crosses to Magsayo’s head. Still, he struggled to capitalize on these opportunities and was cautious of Filipinos’ punches and combinations.

Mark Magsayo connected with a combination that dropped Avelar to one knee in the third round. Although Avelar managed to beat the count and fight back, he was knocked flat on his back by a sweeping left hook to the chin. Referee Ivan Guillermo promptly stopped the fight at 1:13.

As a precautionary measure by the officials and organizers of the boxing event, Avelar was placed on a stretcher and removed from the venue. However, he remained alert and showed movement in his extremities.

The bout against Avelar is Mark Magsayo’s debut in the 130-pound division; following his previous fight on March 4, he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Brandon Figueroa for the WBC interim world featherweight title.

Immediately after that loss, Mark Magsayo announced his move to the junior lightweight division. He lost the WBC world featherweight title on July 9 the previous year, falling to Rey Vargas in a split decision.

Magsayo now believes the victory against Avelar will be a message to the top fighters in the 130 pounds, indicating his readiness to face them in 2024.

Mark Magsayo expressed his dedication to his training and the desire to prove himself in the junior lightweight division, feeling more comfortable and stronger in this weight class. He stated, “I work hard every day in the gym, and I want to prove that I belong in the junior lightweight division. You saw how I sat down on the punch with the knockout.”

Isaac Avelar, the boxer who lives in Aguascalientes, Mexico, saw his record drop to 17 wins and seven losses, with ten knockouts. His previous fight on April 1 ended in a knockout loss to Carlos Arteaga Orona in the eighth round. Avelar has faced a challenging streak, with five losses in his last six bouts.

During the defeat of Avelar at the hands of Mark Magsayo, the crowd was worried about him for some time as he lay prone on the canvas, not moving; however, a short time later, he sat up.

The doctors who were at the event put a neck brace on Avelar and subsequently sent him to the nearest hospital.

This is not the first time Mark Magsayo sent his opponent to the hospital; it also happened earlier on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s final fight in 2021 when he knocked out ex-world titleholder Julio Ceja in the tenth round. Ceja was taken to the hospital but released two days later and never fought again.
