Eumir Marcial Defeats Thoedsak Sinam in Manila

Eumir Marcial showed why he is a world-class fighter by knocking the lights out of Thai opponent Thoedsak Sinam at the 1:33 mark of the fourth round of their super middleweight bout Saturday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila. The Filipino Olympic bronze medalist caught Sinam in the corner as they traded shots. Sinam attempted a body punch, but Marcial unleashed a vicious left uppercut that pummeled the opponent. With the uppercut, the Thai dropped to the canvas, and the referee counted to 10, but Sinam failed to answer the count.

It was a scintillating victory for Marcial as he went toe-to-toe with the Thai. Sinam was not a pushover as he didn’t back down from the strong punches of Marcial. In the first round, Marcial was testing how strong his opponent was with combinations. In the succeeding rounds, the Asian Games silver medalist got more and more aggressive, landing straights and jabs.

He then connected on some combinations as he was smelling victory. Eumir Marcial, who will be competing in the Paris Olympics, now has a professional record of 5-0 with three knockouts, while Sinam dropped to 23-14.

“Kuntento naman po ako sa result. Kasi yun talaga yung ina-ano namin, fourth round susubukan namin i-knockout,” said Marcial in Filipino after the bout. “Asahan nyo pa na sa mga susunod na laban lalo ko pang galingan. I hope na makalaban ako dito sa Pilipinas. Nagpapa-salamat ako sa mainit na pag-suporta sakin.”

The win was Marcial’s last pro fight before pursuing his quest for an Olympic gold. He almost won the gold in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but ended up with a bronze after losing in the semifinals. That year, he competed in the middleweight class but will climb to light heavyweight in Paris.

The 28-year-old pugilist Marcial last fought as a pro in February 2023, when he earned a second-round TKO of Ricardo Villalba at the Alamodome in San Antonio. After the fight, he concentrated on his preparation for the Asiad, where he eventually bagged the silver medal in Hangzhou, China, to clinch a berth in the Paris Games.

According to local boxing officials, Marcial will join the Philippine team that will hold a training camp in Colorado Springs, USA. Earlier, gutsy fighters Arnold Cordoba and Mikko Camby fought to an action-packed four-round draw and were given a $500 bonus each by MP (Manny Pacquiao) Promotions president Sean Gibbons.

World Boxing Council (WBC) president Mauricio Sulaiman, who was in attendance, was likewise impressed and congratulated the two fighters. Also present were POC president and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann, Senator Francis Tolentino, and GAB chairman Atty. Richard Clarin.

The open to the public 10-fight card was presented by MP Promotions and Viva Promotions headed by Brendan Gibbons in cooperation with Sanman Boxing led by JC Manangquil and Elorde Promotions. It was supported by the PSC, the POC, Chooks-to-Go, and Arena Plus. Junnie Navarro, a fellow Zamboangueno and ardent supporter of Marcial was also around.
