Justin Brownlee to Play in Indonesia

Gilas naturalized player Justin Brownlee will take his act in another country as the Ginebra resident import signed with Indonesian team Pelita Jaya. The announcement was made via social media on Wednesday. The club is playing in the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL).

“Yeah, I will be playing abroad. I should be leaving on Sunday,” said Brownlee last March 14 while attending a Premier Volleyball League game.

Brownlee got permission from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and his PBA team, Barangay Ginebra, to play elsewhere to stay in shape. Ginebra head coach Tim Cone has approved Brownlee’s overseas stint, especially since this can help him stay himself as he awaits his next PBA and Ginebra campaign.

“We’re happy for him. Gives him some extra income and helps him stay sharp and in shape,” the two-time PBA Grand Slam coach said.

The 6-foot-6 forward is expected to suit up with the team until June to keep himself busy while awaiting his next Philippine team call-up. Gilas’ next assignment will be the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in July.

This will be his first pro action since returning from a three-month suspension due to a doping violation he committed during the 19th Asian Games. He last saw action in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers’ opening window last February.

Brownlee produced his usual numbers while averaging 21.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists as Gilas convincingly swept its games against Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei. This will be another Asian journey for Brownlee after stints in the Philippines, Lebanon, and UAE. He won championships in all of those stops.

The 35-year-old veteran will be looking to bring his championship pedigree to a Pelita Jaya squad that finished as runners-up in the 2022-23 IBL season.

He will team up with former NBA veterans Thomas Robinson (Sacramento Kings) and KJ McDaniels (Houston Rockets), who are also former PBA imports, and naturalized Indonesian guard Anthony Beane. The team also has Malachi Richardson (Kings) and JaQuori McLaughlin (Dallas Mavericks).

Composing the locals for Pelita Jaya are national team holdovers Brandon Jawato, Andakara Prastawa, Arighi Muhamad, and Agassi Goantara, to name some. Brownlee could also suit up for Pelita Jaya in the Basketball Champions League Asia Qualifiers’ first round on April 3-7 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The signing of a Filipino is not new for this team, which once secured the services of Filipino coach Nat Canson and had Bong Ramos as one of its players. Adding a PBA import to Indonesia is also not new, as no less than seven-time Best Import Bobby Parks is the most notable one, having played for Aspac Jakarta during the mid-1990s.

Brownlee is expected to make his Indonesia debut on Saturday when it faces Rans Simba. This new development will significantly help Ginebra and the national team as Brownlee will be kept in shape, varying any injuries.
